THE LANGUAGE OF EMOTION
Emotional Intelligence (EQ)
What is this and why is it important?
What is this and why is it important?

A simple and profound definition for Emotional Intelligence is "knowing how you and others feel,
and what to do about it".
Human emotion forms a "language" of its own. There is valuable information that comes from our feelings. Sometimes we may not know what our feelings mean. Emotions are our guidance system for safely moving through life. Our emotions are what signals us to proceed or retreat and whether to speak or not.
This "language" has been termed "Emotional Intelligence" (EQ). It is important to see this is a language, because it is a skill that, once acquired, is continually improving.

In our society and many others, we are taught to suppress our true feelings, behaving as others wish us to behave rather than expressing how we actually feel. We may be proficient with our logical, analytic, practical and finite skills while totally inept with the very fundamental and invaluable language of emotion. Our vocabulary in this "emotional language" may be limited making us feel vulnerable, uncertain and exposed while we explore this inner area of our life. It is as if our light has been on dim without our knowing it. To embrace our emotional intelligence fully, we may become acutely aware of just how much we may not have known, or how much we have been missing. It is like putting on a pair of glasses and seeing differently. Once you put on the pair of glasses, you could see what you never had before.
In relationships it is paramount that we be in touch with our emotional maturity. When we are emotionally available to ourselves and others, we are operating from our full potential. Therefore, EQ has become as important in the work force as IQ.
When we are not in touch with our emotional maturity, we are not emotionally available.
When we are not in touch with our emotional maturity, we are not emotionally available.

It takes effort and commitment to become conversant. There is a process involved in learning to both understand and speak the language of emotion. It is acquired by feeling, it is not an intellectual exercise. IQ makes up one side of the brain while EQ is the component that completes the whole brain, creating a balance. When we incorporate both EQ and IQ in our daily lives, our mind and body work in harmony. If EQ and IQ are not in balance, dis-ease occurs. Dis-ease can be anything from poor communication and lack of connection to physical illness and significant life changes.
The emotional journey is a healthy way to experience the aliveness that most of us are seeking through addictions/compulsions and emotional highs. Emotions are not our enemy, they are the gateway to our Soul.
With Emotional Intelligence life becomes more meaningful. Our careers take shape in the directions that are personally fulfilling and abundant. Our relationships become more enriched and deepened. It may be challenging, but ask anyone who has taken this inner journey and they will reply that it was well worth the effort.
